What matters in being loyal or just is that you do fulfil the charge, in a wine-feast that you do enjoy, in mourning that you do grieve, in serving parents that you do please them. To the glory of fulfilling the charge you can pick your own route; in serving parents, if you do please them they won't raise difficulties about how you did it; in the wine-feast, if you do enjoy you won't be finicky about the cups; in mourning, if you do grieve no one quibbles about the rite.

The rites are what the custom of the times has established. The genuine is the means by which we draw upon Heaven; it is spontaneous and irreplaceable. Therefore the sage, taking Heaven as his model, values the genuine and is untramelled by custom. The fool does the opposite; incapable of taking Heaven as his model he frets about man, ignorant of how to value the genuine he timidly lets himself be altered by custom, and so is an unsatisfied man. What a pity you were steeped so soon in man's artificialities, and are so late in hearing the greatest Way!

The universe is wider than our views of it.

To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, nor even to found a school, but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity, and trust.

A little information about me:

  • I am 19 years old.
  • I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, in fact in Lafayette, California (it's a wonder of Wikipedia that an article exists for a little town).
  • I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona (Phoenix area) a few years ago.
  • I am a student at Reed College, majoring in history.

In Wikipedia

  • I am currently a member of the Arbitration Committee. (my candidate statement)
  • I've been known to sporadically haunt the TL, FLC, WP:RFPP, WP:AN, and a few other admin/dispute pages, among others.
  • I also used to run a bot to transwiki dictionary definitions to Wiktionary. The software upgrade killed it. But I encourage everyone to get Cryptic's transwiki script and do their part. And please see if you can help out the transwiki log.
  • On July 24, 2005 I was made admin. (Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Dmcdevit). As always, if you need admin help or just plain Wikipedia help, don't hesitate to ask. I am friendly.
  • I am the same as es:User:Dmcdevit, wikt:User:Dmcdevit, and meta:User:Dmcdevit, though my talk page on this project is the best place to contact me.

Well hello.

I don't really have anything to say, but having a red link for my name was getting annoying. It doesn't really matter what I say here, though, because I can't imagine anyone is ever going to look at my page. Except me really, but only now that I am writing it. So, hi me. Bye me.

  32. I have to thank you for fixing up that NFL champions article. Not that it's my article, at all, but I nominated it and the main criticisms (both by myself and other users) were that the pictures cluttered and the tables didnt line up. I could fix the pictures, but i dont know anything about coding past what i can steal from previous edits, so I was unable to find a place to determine width (presumably because it used a template). In any case, serious thanks are in order.jfg284 20:58, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Ó, guð vors lands! Ó, lands vors guð!
Vér lofum þitt heilaga, heilaga nafn!
Úr sólkerfum himnanna hnýta þér krans
þínir herskarar, tímanna safn.
Fyrir þér er einn dagur sem þúsund ár
og þúsund ár dagur, ei meir:
eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár,
sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr.
Íslands þúsund ár,
Íslands þúsund ár,
eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár,
sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr.
Ó, guð, ó, guð! Vér föllum fram
og fórnum þér brennandi, brennandi sál,
guð faðir, vor drottinn frá kyni til kyns,
og vér kvökum vort helgasta mál.
Vér kvökum og þökkum í þúsund ár,
því þú ert vort einasta skjól.
Vér kvökum og þökkum með titrandi tár,
því þú tilbjóst vort forlagahjól.
Íslands þúsund ár
Íslands þúsund ár
voru morgunsins húmköldu, hrynjandi tár,
sem hitna við skínandi sól.
Ó, guð vors lands! Ó, lands vors guð!
Vér lifum sem blaktandi, blaktandi strá.
Vér deyjum, ef þú ert ei ljós það og líf,
sem að lyftir oss duftinu frá.
Ó, vert þú hvern morgun vort ljúfasta líf,
vor leiðtogi í daganna þraut
og á kvöldin vor himneska hvíld og vor hlíf
og vor hertogi á þjóðlífsins braut.
Íslands þúsund ár
Íslands þúsund ár
verði gróandi þjóðlíf með þverrandi tár,
