Happy Tree Friends show opening.
Happy Tree Friends is a Flash cartoon series by Mondo Mini Shows, created by Kenn Navarro, Aubrey Ankrum and Rhode Montijo.
As indicated on the official site, the show is "not recommended for small children or big babies." In contrast with the cuteness of its characters, the show is highly violent. Nearly every episode features the violent and bloody death of at least one character, with the exception of two episodes: "Out on a Limb" and "Nuttin' but the Tooth" (which still had blood and gore and a character who would have possibly died of blood loss.) While the violence of these deaths is comparable to those of Scratchy from The Itchy and Scratchy Show (a short cartoon featured on The Simpsons), and Rare's Conker's Bad Fur Day, the Happy Tree Friends deaths are significantly more graphic and drawn out.
The show is nearly free of dialogue; when the characters do speak, their words are severely garbled. Though the creators make it obvious to the viewer what each character's reaction is, their words can barely be understood.
According to the website, the idea for Happy Tree Friends was conceived by Rhode Montijo when he drew a yellow rabbit (slightly resembling Cuddles) on a piece of paper and wrote "Resistance Is Futile" underneath it.

Show characteristics
Left to Right: Cuddles, Giggles, Toothy and Petunia are riding in a school bus.
The show consists of 21 characters. (One of them has his own exclusive show, although he is apparently considered to be part of the Happy Tree Friends.citation needed]) The show takes place somewhere in the eastern woodlands of North America, and is based on various North American animals (except for Buddhist Monkey). Cro-Marmot, Cub, Cuddles, Disco Bear, Flaky, Flippy, Giggles, Handy, Lifty, Mime, Mole, Nutty, Petunia, Pop, Russell, Shifty, Sniffles, Splendid and Toothy are all from the United States of America, Lumpy is from Canada, and Buddhist Monkey is from China. All are drawn in a disarmingly cute style. Many of them have two front large buckteeth, and almost all the Happy Tree Friends (except for Lumpy and Sniffles) have the same pink Care Bear heart-shaped noses.
At the beginning of each episode, the characters are typically found in everyday situations. However, these situations eventually develop into very violent occurrences, mostly very unfortunate accidents with common, otherwise harmless props.
Each episode starts with introduction credits resembling a children's book, which portrays the show's logo, the episode's name and cast. After the ending credits, a moral follows. Examples are "Wash behind your ears!" and "Don't bite off more than you can chew!". While adding to the children's book theme, the moral sharply contrasts with the violence previously portrayed by the episode. Typically, the moral is an ironic reference to what happened to the characters in that episode.
Each episode has a typical duration of under three minutes. Usually a few (ranging from one to four) of the characters are used in a single episode, but occasionally larger episodes have been released where most of the characters appear.
Currently, new episodes are released once a month. An episode list can be seen on the official website, which contains a list of older episodes available on demand from the site. However, these episodes are only available for a limited time, as this list is exchanged with other episodes every other week.
Worldwide broadcast
In some countries, certain episodes can be seen on television, such as the Dutch, German, Polish, Brazilian, Italian and Latin American MTV channels, and on the Australian Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) network. On June 10, 2005, the shorts began showing during Attack of the Show!. A series, Happy Tree Friends and Friends, began to air on August 29, 2005, as part of the late night Midnight Spank block, which are all part of G4 (a TV channel for video games). The series has since been cancelled, but Happy Tree Friends shorts still air on Barbed Wire Biscuit/G4's Late Night Peep Show (a compilation of animation that continues to air on G4). Happy Tree Friends has also gained a collection of Audibles and an "environment" for Yahoo!'s instant messenger. It is featured on many websites in which flash cartoons can be watched, such as Newgrounds, Atom Films, Purple Twinkie, and Albino Black Sheep.
Encouraged by the show's success, its creators have released four DVDs (First Blood, Second Serving, Third Strike, and Winter Break) containing the episodes shown on the website and others that have not been released. A collection consisting of three DVDs has also been released.
Selected episodes of Happy Tree Friends are regularly featured in the annual Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, among other diverse talents.
A video game for the series is also planned. Happy Tree Friends & Mondo Mini Shows are currently searching for a publisher. It was also recently announced that a TV series is in the works. The website has confirmed the series debuted on October 2, 2006 at Midnight on G4. This TV series is entirely about the Happy Tree Friends. Four of the characters (Cuddles, Flippy, Lumpy and Nutty) have Myspace accounts. The TV series got a sneak premiere at San Diego Comic Con on July 20, 2006 at 6:00 P.M. local time. The website has also announced that fans will be able to see 7 minute episode segments once each month starting September 1st through the end of the year. The first episodes to go online were "From Hero to Eternity", "Don't Yank My Chain", "Sea What I Found", and "Wishy Washy".The October 2nd premiere episode will featured the following three segments: "Party Animal", "Ipso Fatso" and "Don't Yank my Chain".
Main Characters
The characters each have their own distinct personality and traits. Most of the Happy Tree Friends are very young - the children such as Cuddles, Flaky, Shifty, Lifty, Giggles, Mime, Nutty, Petunia, Sniffles and Toothy are between four to eight years old. Some, such as Russell, are teenagers. Adults such as Disco Bear, Flippy, Handy, Lumpy, The Mole, and Pop, are anywhere between twenty to fifty-five years old. Cub is Pop's young son, and therefore is probably about 2 years old.
Cro-Marmot
Cro-Marmot the prehistoric marmot frozen in a block of ice.
Animal: Prehistoric Marmot/ Place of Origin: Anchorage, Alaska/ Gender: Male V.A.: Unknown
Like Handy, he somehow performs many tasks (such as throwing snowballs) while entirely encased in ice. Cro-Marmot is mostly seen in snowy areas, and sometimes drives an ice cream truck (supposedly to keep himself frozen.) It's possible that the ice he's usually encased in protects him from disaster, so, unless something happens to the ice, he is almost invulnerable to most disastrous events (however, he dies in 'Dino-Sore Days'). Cro-Marmot rarely appears in the series.
Cub
Animal: Grizzly Bear/ Place of Origin: Los Angeles, California/ Gender: Male
A very young light brown bear who wears a diaper and a propeller hat, he is Pop's only son. He likes to wander carelessly around and operate machines all by himself. He is doomed both by his father's attention and the occasional lack of it. Being the youngest member of the Happy Tree Friends, he is often seen carelessly drifting into death-introducing hazards. Despite his appearance being similar to a baby, Cub's level of intelligence and behavior can be attributed to that of a young child.
Cuddles
Cuddles about to learn why it's a bad idea to put a fork into an electrical socket.
Animal: Eastern Cottontail/ Place of Origin: Indianapolis, Indiana/ Gender: Male
A canary-yellow rabbit whose pursuits include skateboarding and swimming, Cuddles is claimed to be the main character in the series, and stars in most of the advertisements. He dies in almost every episode he is in. Cuddles' favorite color seems to be pink, as he always wears pink bunny slippers and has pink cheeks. His fondness is particularly noticeable in the episode 'Sweet Ride', where as well as his regular cheeks and slippers, he ordered a pink strawberry flavored ice cream, and was riding his pink skateboard. He was one of the first characters to be created in Happy Tree Friends. It appears that Cuddles and Giggles are very close friends since they appear in many episodes together. Flaky is another friend with whom he shares several episodes with. Cuddles is dangerously mischievous, as evidenced in the episodes 'From A to Zoo' and 'Let it Slide.' His account on Myspace mentions that he is actually allergic to carrots, although he enjoys blowing through a straw into a glass of carrot juice, which soothes his ears and tickles his pink little nose. In 'Ipso Fatso,' Cuddles is visible driving a car right before he crashes into the tree. He's Kenn Navarro's personal favorite.
Disco Bear
Disco Bear is disco dancing under a disco ball.
Animal: Bear/ Place of Origin: New York, New York/ Gender: Male
A golden bear with an orange Afro who likes to dance to disco music. He wears 1970s style clothing such as his bell bottoms and his dancing platform shoes. He usually gets everyone around him in life threatening trouble while dancing, but mistakes their movements of pain for his funky dance moves. He is sometimes seen trying to impress other female characters, such as Giggles and Petunia, usually killing them in the process. He just ignores he/she. He has also bumped Flaky out of the way in certain episodes, such as 'Rink Hijinks', when Flaky is trying to conquer a fear. In those episodes both Disco Bear and Flaky are killed. He is even seen going on an awkward date with Petunia in the episode 'Blind Date', in which Petunia ends up spraying pepper spray in his face when he was about to kiss her. He appears to be 'stuck in the 1970s'. Despite his failures in wooing the ladies, he seems to be pretty well off financially as we've seen him with a private ski cabin 'Ski Ya, Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya' and his own submarine 'Sea What I found' Disco Bear actually has quiet bad eating habits.
Flaky
Flaky the Frightened Porcupine.
Animal: North American Porcupine/ Place of Origin: Ann Arbor, Michigan/ Gender: Unknown (though there is increasing evidence of possibly Flaky being a female)
An androgynous red porcupine whose quills are full of dandruff, thus his/her name. His/her spiny quills are often what kills him/herself or the other Happy Tree Friends. Flaky's gender is still in question; though his/her voice and characteristics are distinctly feminine, the lack of prominent eyelashes, as seen on female cast members such as Giggles and Petunia, have caused a great deal of confusion (even though Warren Graff claimed Flaky a girl on the Happy Tree Friends forums). His/her best friend appears to be Cuddles since they both appear in many episodes together. Flaky is normally frightened, delicate, paranoid, reluctant and always prefers extreme caution, though in rare cases he/she does something brave, such as riding a haunted house or putting his/her foot into a nail to avoid an avalanche. His/her own quills hurt and harm other characters frequently, and also cause his/her own life to be hazardous. Also some people claimed that a few 'she's' slipped in the Question Kenn column. Flaky is the only character to be deliberately murdered by someone other than Flippy. Flaky is apparently very allergic to peanuts, as they cause him/her to swell up like a balloon!
Flippy
Flippy in his berserk state.
Animal: Bear/ Place of Origin: Fort Dix, New Jersey/ Gender: Male V.A.: Aubrey Ankrum
A green bear who is a veteran of war. He is sent into shell-shock when he hears or sees something that reminds him of war, such as a crackling campfire or mistaking a ketchup spill for a pool of blood. For example, in the episode 'Flippin' Burgers', he walked into the burger joint happily, until he saw Cuddles and Giggles laughing because Cuddles squirted ketchup onto Giggles. This sent Flippy out of control. His Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is the cause for the grisly, guerrilla warfare. In most episodes he appears in, he is the cause of everybody's deaths. Usually when he goes insane, his eyes turn green, though they turned yellow in the episode 'Hide and Seek' and blue in 'Remains To Be Seen.' Another sign of his insanity is that his voice changes from a cute, innocent high pitch to an evil, deep low pitch. However, an exception to this is when Flippy appeared on Happy Trails Part 2, where, for much of the episode, he has a low-pitched voice like that of Pop (which makes sense since both Flippy and Pop are similar and are voiced by the same person). It was also said in the Question Kenn section that Pop would originally be in Happy Trails instead of Flippy.citation needed] Flippy's preferred methods of killing and his own background are likely to be references to Rambo. This is especially evident in 'Hide and Seek', where Flippy mimicked Rambo's actions in a scene from Rambo: First Blood Part 2, as he hunted and killed his friends in the woods while they were playing a game of hide and seek. Flippy even carries a bowie knife similar to that wielded by Rambo. Flippy also, for unknown reasons, possesses hand grenades. A deluxe edition Flippy figurine shows him with the more modern M67 fragmentation grenade. Flippy always seems to have a specific method for killing the characters he appears with, such as strangling them or snapping their necks (although for Petunia, he shoved her face on the frying grill in the episode 'Flippin' Burgers', and he shoved her head into a popcorn cooker in the episode 'Keepin' it reel'). The following is a list of the characters whom Flippy has particular strategies for. Some remain to be seen:
- Cuddles-Full frontal attacks (usually to the face)
- Giggles-Death by unconventional weapons (intestines, condiment bottles)
- Flaky-Strangulations
- Toothy-Sneak attacks
- Petunia-cooking (hamburgers, popcorn) or pretty much anything slow and painful.
There are exceptions to the ways he kills the other characters though, such as burning Flaky alive in a sleeping bag or grenading Petunia. Though neither cases resulted in certain death, as neither victims were actually seen dead.
Happy Tree Friends fans call him the most violent character in the show. His Myspace account mentions that he enjoys jogging, feeding birds, eating chocolate chip cookies, and sewing. He is also one of the few characters who rarely die in the series, except in 'Happy Trails Pt. 2', where a spaceship he is in with Handy and Sniffles is pulled into the sun by its gravitational pull. He has killed all the characters at least once, except for Splendid, Disco Bear and Cro-Marmot. Though Flippy hasn't attacked The Mole, Lifty & Shifty individually, he killed them along with some of the other characters in 'Remains To Be Seen' in the truck crash. He hasn't directly attacked Pop or Cub either, though in 'Flippin Burgers' after Flippy causes the fast food joint to blow up, Pop and Cub get caught in it. From the insignia on Flippy's clothing, it can be inferred that he has the rank of a corporal. Flippy rarely turns back to normal in the episodes. He actually does turn back to normal at the end of Party Animal.
Giggles
Giggles caught a fish on a stick.
Animal: Eastern Chipmunk/ Place of Origin: Buffalo, New York/ Gender: Female
A pink chipmunk with a little red bow on her hair, she is one of the only female characters in the show. She has the personality of a young girl, as she enjoys frolicking through flowers and having tea parties, until disaster befalls her. She enjoys solving crossword puzzles and writing poetry. She tends to giggle frequently, earning her name. Giggles is allergic to roses, though she likes them. Her Myspace account mentions that she wishes to see herself on a cereal box one day. Giggles is one of the main characters in the series and she appears in most advertisements along with Cuddles and Toothy. She also appears on a lot of the Happy Tree Friends merchandise. It seems that she has a slight crush on Cuddles, considering she kisses him while she is a zombie in 'Remains to Be Seen.'
Handy
Frustrated Handy drinking a soda bottle angrily.
Animal: Beaver/ Place of Origin: Rochester, Minnesota/ Gender: Male
An orange craftsman beaver with unexplained amputated hands. The stumps are covered with bandages. He wears a tool belt and a worker's helmet. He still manages to perform all sorts of tasks, but only off-screen. Ironically, his dam is littered with items that are operated by hand, like drills and yo-yos. Handy gets angry and frustrated at times, and he wishes he had hands to do the things he needs to do. Some of the fans of the Happy Tree Friends say that Handy has a crush on Petunia, referring to 'House Warming' when Petunia hugged him.
Lifty & Shifty
Lifty (left) and Shifty (right) looking in the fridge for something to eat.
Animal: Common Raccoons/ Place of Origin: Manchester, New Hampshire/ Gender: Male V.A.: Mark Giambruno (1st), Kenn Navarro (2nd)
Two green kleptomaniac raccoon brothers who are actually twins. They love to steal precious merchandise from the other Happy Tree Friends. Although they have the same markings, personality and voice, Shifty wears a fedora, and he sometimes bosses Lifty. Despite the smirks on their faces and their kleptomania, they almost always end up perishing in the process, although Lifty has, on one occasion, possibly survived. Shifty usually dies before Lifty except in "Milkin' It'. Their green color implies money, greed and selfishness, relating to their 'criminal duo' personalities. They also have a trademark evil chuckle. They've both shown to have above-average intelligence as in their modus operandi and their underwater chess-playing in 'Sea What I Found', meaning that their failures may just be from bad luck. But in 'Ipso Fatso', they FINALLY pulled out a successful heist, making off with a big slab of beef from a meat locker and not getting caught.
The two mostly steal from Lumpy -- in 'Milkin' It', they stole a cow from Lumpy's farm, and in 'Meat Me For Lunch', Lifty & Shifty stole meat from Lumpy's store.
Lumpy
Lumpy and a falling anvil.
Animal: Moose/ Place of Origin: London, Ontario/ Gender: Male
A light blue moose with apparently very low intelligence, bad teeth, disorbited eyes and mismatched antlers. Known to be the big brother, or perhaps babysitter, of many of the other characters, he is also the biggest idiot in the entire forest. He is one of the grown-up characters in the show and the only character with a standard nose with two nostrils (the smaller Happy Tree Friends all have heart-shaped noses). Lumpy has probably appeared in the most episodes out of all the other Tree Friends, and is also the only character to have a butt, nipples, and (although it is never shown) a penis. (The penis is assumed because Giggles screams every time Lumpy forgets to wear pants.) Most fans consider him the odd one out. There were some arguments about him being too close to Bullwinkle the Moose, so his left antler was drawn upside down. He's probably the one who's featured in most episodes. Lumpy has had many occupations in many episodes, including teacher, ticket clerk, bus driver, convenience store owner, and more. He is usually a fill-in character like Wooldoor Sockbat from Drawn Together. He is often shown in tremendously incongruous situations, such as lounging lazily, shirtless, in a hammock, while the rest of the Happy Tree Friends gang is playing in the snow. He does not die in most episodes despite being so stupid, though this low intelligence is sometimes the cause of other characters' deaths. He lives in a trashy trailer and drives a Lincoln Continental. His Myspace account mentions that his favorite dessert is cheesecake and that he likes to talk to lettuce. He seems too be an good friend of Russel because of their many episodes toogether.
Mime
Animal: Deer/ Place of Origin: Portland, Maine/ Gender: Male
A purple deer with a painted face who wears a black and white striped shirt. Presumably, he does not speak because he is a mime. He is talented with circus skills like juggling and creating balloon animals. His attempts to entertain his fellow Happy Tree Friends often have fatal consequences. Mime is also very fond of peanuts, going so far as to stick his hand in a blender to eat them. He is also SLIGHTLY on the pudgy side (most noticeable in the opening credits for "Keeping it Reel" when his picture pops up.)

You can help by editing it now. A guide is available, as is general editing help.
The Mole
Mole operating the stage spotlight.
Animal: Mole/ Place of Origin: Oakland, California/ Gender: Male
A lavender blind mole with a mole on his face (Which was really a detonation device in the episode Mole in the City) and dark sunglasses. He usually wears a purple trenchcoat or a black turtleneck. Like Mime, he never speaks. It may be possible that he is not only blind, but he is also mute as well, but he is not deaf. Disaster follows his blind bumblings, and he seems to love stuffed animals. He doesn't appear to have his driver's licence revoked, since he has been seen driving. He also has an old-time arch-nemesis known as The Rat, most likely because they both have careers in industrial Espionage. It is questionable whether The Mole has actually never died in the series although he has been injured. Viewers have never seen him lying dead, but during the emergency evacuation of the burning schoolhouse in 'Class Act', someone must have pushed him face-first piercing through his right eye and through his head with his walking cane. He may have died in Happy Trails Part 1, as he is seen in a window of the school bus as they run off the cliff. (He looks calm although, as he has no idea what is going on). And he doesn't appear in Happy Trails Part 2. His dead body is buried underneath one of the burial crosses of the stranded island. In the halloween specaial he, and almost everyone else, are killed, zombified and killed again when Flippy's brain explodes. It is most likely that in, 'Don't Yank My Chain', The Mole actually dies on screen where his head is sliced in half. However, some fans believe that he survived, as he can be seen twitching (although, alot of Happy Tree Friends have a habit of twitching after they die), and his ultimate fate is unknown. That makes a total of two to three episodes in which he died. He starts dying on screen in the TV series.
In Blind Date he was supposed to go on a date with Giggles, but he went on a date with Lumpy by accident.
Nutty
Nutty the candy-addicted squirrel.
Animal: Squirrel/ Place of Origin: New Haven, Connecticut/ Gender: Male V.A.: Michael 'Lippy' Lippman
A light green crazed squirrel with an enormous addiction for sugar, sweets and candies. Nutty has various candies stuck to his fur, including a lollipop, a candy apple and different other sweets. One of his wobbly eyes can move independently of the other. He is very hyperactive and jittery, which may be caused by extreme sugar overdose and his rabies. His craving for candy usually results in his and others' downfall. His Myspace account mentions that he currently has fourteen cavities. When deprived of candy his mouth starts foaming, providing evidence that he has rabies. Nutty often becomes dissatisfied when he can't get the candy he desires, which eventually causes him more pain than gain. In the Second Serving DVD, he had his own breakfast cereal called Sugar frosted Nutty honey, but there is hardly any cereal pieces in it - the picture only shows a large pile of sugar in the bowl.(Nutty can be seen eating this cereal in Concrete Solution, when Nutty pours one cereal piece into a bowl(on purpose), and the pouring a whole mountain of cement(that he mistook as a bag of sugar) into the bowl.)
Nutty is always in episodes that feature candy, with the exception of the episode 'Eye Candy', where it was Toothy instead.
Petunia
Petunia working as a fry cook in a burger restaurant.
Animal: Skunk/ Place of Origin: Chicago, Illinois/ Gender: Female V.A.: Dana Belben
A pretty blue skunk, who is one of the two/three female characters in the show. She always wears a pine scent car air freshener or deodorizer around her neck to cover up her skunk smell, even though she bathes many times a day, making it possible that she has no idea that skunks themselves don't smell. She is said to be the cleanest skunk you'll ever meet. People will often refer to Petunia as one of the most unfortunate Happy Tree Friends, with a long range of slow, gruesome, and painful deaths under her name.
Pop
Pop found a brick that was clogging the blades of the lawnmower.
Animal: Grizzly Bear/ Place of Origin: Los Angeles, California/ Gender: Male
A light brown bear who is another adult character, the stereotypically clueless, bathrobe-wearing, pipe-smoking 1950s style sitcom father. His inattention (or at times simply attention) often means bad things for his only son, Cub. For example, he will lie on his hammock lazily, while Cub operates a lawnmower. Most of the time, he is ignorant of his son's death, and continues throughout the whole day as if nothing ever happened. His wife's whereabouts are unknown, but she probably had a permanent death. But rest assured he can handle the stress of being a single parent. Pop is another character who rarely dies in the show. Pop along with Cub, is currently featured in the preloader image with the warning that said 'Small Children Should Not Watch'. It can also be noted that Pop has a much more intelligible way of speaking, as is especially notable in the episode 'Water Way To Go', mostly towards the end of the episode. This can also be evidenced in the BBQ Smoochie that he is featured in (if you click the 'light' option, when he takes the lighting liquid out of his pocket, he can clearly be heard saying, "Ah, here we go!").
Russell
Russell the Atlantic Sea Otter Pirate.
Animal: Sea Otter/ Place of Origin: Boston, Massachusetts/ Gender: Male V.A.: Jeff Biancalana (1st), Francis Carr (2nd)
A turquoise sea otter pirate with typical pirate accessories (a Jolly Roger's hat, a hook, an eyepatch and two wooden peglegs). He enjoys fishing, sailing and eating seafood. Russell's initial character design depicted him with a five o'clock shadow, though since his early appearances, it seems as though he shaves regularly. Typically, his vocabulary consists only of 'Yar!' and 'Yar?', though in the episode Get Whale Soon, he can also say things like 'Aha!' and 'Huh?' Because Russell spends most of his time in the water, he is rarely seen with the other characters, though he does appear in a few episodes with Lumpy, although nowadays he seems to appear with all the others as well. He dies in about every episode he appears in although he doesn't appear in many. Russell can be said to be the opposite of Handy; as Handy has no hands, Russell does not have any real legs or feet.
Sniffles
Sniffles and an ant on a frozen lake.
Animal: Anteater/ Place of Origin: Phoenix, Arizona/ Gender: Male V.A.: Liz Stuart
A nerdy bluish-grey anteater who likes to play in the sandbox, likes to learn about science and solve square roots. He always gets into trouble, and it seems like his worst enemies are actually his favorite snack: ants. Sniffles has a rather large I.Q., as proven in the episodes 'Happy Trails Pt. 2' and 'Suck It Up', since he builds or invents things that are far more advanced than most things the other characters make. (Sniffles also does not have a heart-shaped nose like the other Happy Tree Friends because he has a snout). Despite his book smarts, he's still not clever (or lucky) enough to avoid gruesome fates.
Splendid
Splendid has a bright idea.
Animal: Northern Flying Squirrel/ Place of Origin: New York, New York/ Gender: Male
A sky blue superheroic flying squirrel who is always doing housework. His superpowers are based loosely on those of Superman; he can fly, shoot laserbeams from his eyes, has super strength, supersonic hearing, and turning back time. Despite his power (or possibly because of it), he commonly ends up unintentionally killing the characters he rescues, and is usually oblivious to it afterwards. Due to his ability to reverse time, it is possible that Splendid can save the various Happy Tree Friends from the horrible deaths that happen to them, and bring them back to life, but this is never fully shown in an episode. From watching 'Remains To Be Seen', it would seem that Toothy is a fan of Splendid in that episode. Toothy dresses up as Splendid for Halloween. Splendid seems to have a little crush on giggles, because he saves her all the time in their episodes toogeter. He sounds like an adult because of the voice and the 'super hero image'
Toothy
Toothy laughing while playing a game of hide and seek.
Animal: Beaver/ Place of Origin: Mountain Top, Pennsylvania/ Gender: Male V.A.: Warren Graff
A light purple beaver with very large buckteeth. Known to be a great fan of Splendid, he dresses up as Splendid in 'Remains To Be Seen'. Usually, he acts before he thinks, for example running away and throwing a lit candle on a stage curtain behind him. He tends to cry a lot when in distress. As with Cuddles, Lumpy and Giggles he is another of the main characters since he's often seen with them both on Happy Tree Friends products and advertisements. It's hard to describe Toothy's personality because he doesn't really have anything that differentiates him from the other Happy Tree Friends. One could say that he is a slightly tweeked version of Cuddles. Toothy seems too be a character as kidding very much,Like in the episode At Zoo, Part 1. he and cuddles bothered a rhino.
Buddhist Monkey
Buddhist Monkey (right) fighting one of his enemies.
Animal: Monkey/ Place of Origin: Possibly China/ Gender: Male V.A.: Jeff Biancalana
The creators thought this character was such a great idea that he deserved his own show, which has currently had only two episodes and were originally exclusive for the second and third DVDs. However, in June 2006, the episode Enter The Garden was released on the website. As his name implies, he is a Chinese monkey who lives his life in the way of Buddha. He has brown fur with four dots in the shape of a square on his forehead and wears what appears to be a brown, monk-like robe with three circle-like objects worn as a belt. He is often very calm and enjoys libraries and gardens, but he is known for his Flippy-style rages when the evil Unknown Ninjas ruin his day wrecking books and destroying gardens. Yet he only kills the ninjas, nobody else. He has made several cameo appearances in the regular episodes. Like clips from one Buddhist Monkey playing on a cinema screen, and Cub playing a claw-grabbing prize machine with an image of Buddhist Monkey on the side of it. He along with Splendid are the only two remaining characters who have not died yet.
Other Characters
Ants
Screaming terrified ants with sadistic manners of defending themselves. They appear as a family (two parents, a son and a daughter). The Ants always kill Sniffles when he attempts to eat them, after first inflicting gruesome tortures upon him such as grating his tongue with a cheese grater and then dripping lemon juice on it.
The Rat
A stylistically drawn rat, similar to the villains in crime noir, and mortal enemy of The Mole. He has appeared only in the episode ‘Mole and the City’, and was killed in an explosion. The Rat wears a trench coat and a Fedora hat, has black fur, and long, scraggly whiskers. His vehicle seems to be a giant see-though ball, much like those used by domestic rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc. Whether he will ever appear again is uncertain, as the style in which he is drawn differs drastically from the other Happy Tree friends.
Giggles's Mother
Appearing only in the episode ‘Helping Helps’, Giggles’s mother answered the door to her home when Splendid came to drop off Giggles’s body. She looks almost identical to Giggles, only much taller and wearing an apron. So far, she is the only parent of a main character to appear in any episode, with the exception of Pop.
Panda Mom
An innocent Panda mother and her child that are saved by Buddhist Monkey from the Unnamed Ninjas. She only appeared in the episode ‘Books of Fury’.
Balloon Vendor Elephant
Another stylistic character only appearing in ‘Mole and the City’. This large elephant sells balloons to a child, until he is cut apart by raining shards of glass broken by The Mole. His death in turn saves The Mole’s life, as the balloons released offer a soft landing for him.
Pig Child
The final character only to appear in ‘Mole and the City’, this child appears devastated by the balloon vendor’s death. But he soon perks up when The Mole gives him the balloons, which send him flying off into the sky. It can be assumed he will somehow die.
Generic Tree Friend
Used en masse when needed, for example, in a large audience. They all look the same lavender in color, although they are rarely used as not many episodes require large crowds. In the Happy Tree Friends and Friends episode in which the dirty chair's spring goes right through Flaky's body bringing out his/her large intestine, and got smashed by the theater chair, you can see an unnamed Happy Tree Friend in the back row.
Unknown Ninjas
A special group of Generic Tree Friends from Japan, who terrorizes any sacred or silent place where Buddhist Monkey is. These dark ninjas are exclusive to the only two Buddhist Monkey episodes, both of which have recently been shown online. They are always seem to be ruining gardens and wrecking libraries. This always brings on the full wrath of Buddhist Monkey, who will then proceed to defeat them brutally. Unlike sterotypical ninjas, they are dressed in dark green.
Cursed Idol
An ancient relic that looks like a native from Mexico, Central or South America, with mysterious powers and a menacing look. This means this Latin American artifact is cursed. It's a bronze statuette with long hair, with an ominous face, an open mouth and hollow eyes. And it is said the Cursed Idol is responsible for the Happy Tree Friends death tolls. It's first appearance is the episode Treasure Those Idol Momemts (Althoagh it originated in 'Crazy Antics', (it could be found in the dirt)) when Toothy was the first Happy Tree Friend who discovered it after he fell from the swing and was later killed by a swing impaling his head caused by none other than the Cursed Idol. The Cursed Idol is considered to be a female. It is stylistically similar to and more than likely based on the idol that Indiana Jones raided out of the Aztec temple in the opening of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Character deaths
There are several points to be taking into account when looking at this guide:
- Every character is featured in the holiday episode Class Act: They all seem to die when the school explodes. This is simply a guess, because none of them are actually seen dead. Some might have survived, or been thrown aside by the explosion. Some fans think The Mole walked in the wrong direction when the singing started, and wasn't blown up, or that Flippy was too busy brutalizing the Happy Tree Friends to join, or even that someone might have recovered from the explosion. The idea that all characters came to an end is only speculation, as that would be congrouous with the show's nature, but it is technically possible that some might have lived.
- Splendid hasn't ever died so far due the fact that his superpowers can shield him from harm. Although it is debatable whether or not he died in Class Act, it can be said that his powers were able to protect him from the school's explosion.
- Sometimes after Smoochie deaths, characters lie twitching every few seconds (until you click "Reset".)
- Because Cro-Marmot is usually encased in ice, it's possible that the ice protects him for disasters surrounding him, so he can't die very often.
- "Idol-Introduced" means that the death was caused from the cursed idol.
- Some deaths are argueable, as the characters are sometimes not actually shown dead (often happens with Lumpy and the Mole).
- Fact: The ones who usually cause other tree friend's deaths are usually the ones who hardly ever die themselves. e.g. Flippy, The Mole and Splendid.
- Fact 2: Some tree friends don't die in their first episode but have died in almost all the other episodes. e.g. Disco Bear, Handy and Mime
This is a very questionable scene in HTF history, which has a 50/50 chance of death or surival for each individual character.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

- Stealing The Spotlight: Eyes melt from bright light.
- Blind Date: When 'The Mole' drives into a truck it tears off the top part of his car and with it, the skin covering Lumpy's brain, then birds feed on it. His right foot is then scraped on the pavement when 'The Mole's car door closes on it.
- From A to Zoo: The bus he is driving crashes because of a camera flash by a baboon.
- I Get A Trick Out Of You: Uses a magic potion to disappear. Then we see Lumpy lying on the floor, dead.

Mime
- Happy Trails Pt 1: Chokes on a peanut.

- Party Animal: Flippy pushes him into the blender, causing Mime a gory and painful death.
- Doggone It: Lumpy tackles him, sending him onto the side of the curb where a car crushes his head
The Mole
- Happy Trails Pt 1: Though not shown on screen, it is likely that he died when the bus crashes on the island since he is seen in this part and not in the next. This is the only time, other than "Class Act", that the Mole is presumed to be dead. However, the probability of the Mole's death in this one is much higher, since there is no way he could have escaped from the bus as easily.
- Class Act: Cane impaled through eye socket (first time he's seen in a bloody accident). Possibly dies when the school explodes.
- Remains To Be Seen: Possibly killed by Flippy in the crash, but unlike all the other characters, he is not buried by in his grave because he was walking in the other direction when Flippy's brain exploded, making him the only zombie to have survived.
- Don't Yank My Chain: His head is sliced in two by a saw in a sawmill. This is the first time where he actually dies and you see his lifeless dead corpse. His body was then most likely dragged through the tunnel.
- From Hero to Eternity: Sucked into a whirlpool.
- Party Animal: Appeared to be stuck onto the "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" board by Flaky's quills when Flaky exploded. Unsure if that killed him.
- Concrete Solution: The truck goes too far back, impaling The Mole and killing him.
Nutty
- Nuttin' But the Tooth: Toothy drills through his head - his lower jaw torn off with rope. Does not die, but counted as it definitely would have hurt (not to mention he would probably die eventually from blood loss or starvation (He can't eat without a jaw)).
- Nuttin Wrong With Candy: Trying to retrieve candy from a nearby vending machine, Nutty attempts to grab it when the candy bar is stuck in the wire coils. Succeeds in grabbing the candy, but tears off arm when he tries to retrieve it. This causes the vending machine to drop onto him. The next frame shows Nutty moaning in contentment-there's a candy bar in this mouth. However, the coils holding the candy bars turn on, drilling into Nutty's skull and eyes.
- Stealing the Spotlight: After mistaking Lumpy's Christmas lights for candy and eating them, Lumpy yanks on what's left of the cord and pulls out Nutty's insides in the process.
- Sweet Ride: Head gets stuck in bee hive; his face is stung by hundreds of bees.
- Icy You: Drinks too much out of the Slushie machine thus causing his mouth to freeze onto the nozzle. Attempts to pull mouth free, rips mouth off, stumbles backwards into a rack and is "popped" like a balloon. Also he flies in between the candy shop's sliding doors and has his head crushed by them. (They were automatic sliding doors, in particular. The doors' mechanisms "think" that Nutty has gone through the door, and thus closed.)
- Class Act: possibly dies when the school explodes.
- Remains To Be Seen: Killed in the crash. revived as a zombie and dies again when Flippy's brain explodes.
- Smoochie-Toy: Knocks his tooth out with a yo-yo and then throws a hard "sleeper", causing it to rub against himself and produce a buzzing sound until the friction burns him alive.

- From Hero to Eternity: Repeatingly slammed up on the walls of the treehouse that Splendid used as a bat.

- Ipso Fatso: Mutilated by shards of glass when Disco Bear crashes through the gym's window.
Petunia
Petunia's head is crushed by a lemonade stand sign plaque in the episode Eyes Cold Lemonade.
- A to Zoo: (Part 1) Gets impaled by shards of glass and Lumpy hits her with a tranquilizer dart by accident, then falls into the snake pit where the snake devours her whole. (Part 2) When Lumpy cuts the snake in half, he sees Petunia covered in what looks like digestive fluids.
- Blind Date: The mole bumps into the car she's in with Disco Bear pushing the car off the cliff. Death isn't certain but highly likely.
- Happy Trails pt. 1: Is impaled by the bus' gear handle by the Cursed Idol, Lumpy then changes gears with her still on it causing the handle to mutilate her body. (Idol induced)
- Hide and Seek: Falls into a spike pit (reminiscent to the Viet Cong punji pits of the Vietnam War). Flippy then later hands her an active grenade, to finish the job and end her suffering. If mercy-killing is the case, then this marks the only time Flippy actually performed an act of mercy, in spite of his "Flip-out" (though, Petunia's death is not shown because the cartoon fades to black and then the grenade explosion can be heard).
- House Warming: Is burnt to a crisp by the house fire followed by a bucket of petrol kicked at by Handy then being stepped on by Handy's cleats. She isn't actually shown dead, though, but probably will be soon.

- Class Act: Arm half blown off somehow leaving the bone. Possibly dies when the school explodes.
- Flippin' Burgers: Flippy slams her face on the heat grill gruesomely grilling her face before the whole building explodes. Considered by many fans to be the most gruesome death on the show to date. When Flippy lifts her head up, the skin on her face sticks to the grill, causing her face to be terribly skinned (Flippy performs this in pure sadism and cruelty a la Kazuo Kiriyama, The Punisher, or Ryuji Yamazaki). Later killed when the restaurant explodes (after the explosion, Petunia's face is shown as burnt in a coal-like black color) But when Flippy slams her face on the grill, she is screaming, this proves that she is not dead until the restaurant explodes.
- Eyes Cold Lemonade: Face crushed by the Lemonade banner board. She also loses an eye which will be used for Giggles' "lemonade". (picture of her death is shown above)

- Kringle-Bells: Horse-kicked to death by a skinny, maybe neglected reindeer.
- Kringles-Feast: Possibly died of Gas from cooker or from starvation but the house she was in explodes thanks to the gas being ignited by Lumpy, most likely killing her.

- Get Whale Soon: Impaled in the eye by a ship's mast.
- Off the Hook: Is hooked in the eyelid by Lumpy's fishing rod. Dragged through water. Zapped by an eel. His skin torn off by coral. Hits a seamine and explodes when Lumpy yanks on the fishing line.

- Suck it Up: Sniffles's vacuum snout sucks up several tacks left by the Ants, a spill of acid which dissolves his snout (also made by the Ants), then sucks up his brains through his ear and finally, has the vacuum set on reverse and sucks up his whole body and spits it out of the end.
- Happy Trails pt. 2: The rocket he is with Handy and Flippy burns up in the sun. Unlike the others, his head explodes before he hits the sun due to the intense heat.

- A to Zoo: Gets impaled by the rhino's horn after Cuddles annoyed the rhino by poking it with a stick.

When he pulls the lollipop out, his eye and retinal cord are sent flying into the air and it ties itself onto a tree. Toothy climbs up the tree to retrieve his eye. He tries to keep his balance on the branch but loses it when a woodpecker pecks the loose eye. He is hanging off the branch by his retinal cord and his brain and other eye go through his right eye socket.
- Happy Trails pt. 1: Flies and does backflip out of the bus (possibly lives by falling in the sea).
- Better Off Bread: Gets hit by a meteorite when Splendid destroyed the comet. Later, Splendid travels back in time, and it seems as though Toothy never died like this anymore and apparently died when the meteor may have hit the planet.
- Hide and Seek: Neck snapped by Flippy, who suddenly appeared behind him as he is somehow camouflaged to the tree which Toothy is hiding behind, a la Rambo.
- Mime and Mime Again: The bandage "hypnotised" by Mime pulls up and breaks Toothy's leg in half, then the leg stings after Mime accidentally spills medical alcohol above the broken spot. Ninjas

Other Deaths
- In the two episodes starring Buddhist Monkey, the evil ninjas are brutally beaten and killed by Buddhist Monkey in several different ways.
- In the episode 'Mole and the City' a character (who only makes his appearance in that episode) called 'The Rat' dies when he falls into a mouse trap factory and dies when the factory explodes, and an elephant dies when he gets shredded by raining glass pieces. The mole might also have died in this episode after mistakingly sticking a "mole" bomb to his face, but his death wasn't shown.
- Generic Tree Friends are occasionally killed en masse, such as in Pitchin' Impossible, Flippin' Burgers, Class Act and Stealing The Spotlight.
What Sets Flippy Off
There are certain events in the episodes that Flippy appears in, which causes him to transform into his satanic alter-ego:
- This Is Your Knife: The sparks from the campfire reminded him of campfires the soldiers made during the wars and the explosions.
- Hide and Seek: Listening to a woodpecker peck a tree reminds him of gunshots, particularly from automatic weapons.
- Flippin Burgers: When Cuddles was putting ketchup on his French Fries, he accidentally sprayed some on Giggles. Then Flippy enters the restaurant. Two things set Flippy berserk: Cuddles's way of holding the ketchup bottle (like an enemy soldier pointing a gun at a war hostage) and Giggles' head soaked red with ketchup (looking like blood).
- Class Act: The burning school reminds him of a building set on fire, most likely similar to a scene in his war life.
- Remains To Be Seen: A quiet exploding sound in the truck's exhaust pipe reminds him of a gunshot. The radioactive waste makes him even more vicious, turning his eyes blue instead of the usual green and with pointed teeth and a demented smile.
- Keepin It Reel: Lumpy bumps into the movie reeler, which causes flickering that Flippy recognises as bombs going off in the night sky. It is also possible that simply seeing the ninja on the screen could have done it.
- Party Animal: When Toothy takes out the cake cutter, Flippy almost flips out thinking it's a knife(he even gains his evil face for a second), and after Flaky accidentally swallows some nuts, he/she bloats up, popping some balloons, with his/her spikes, reminding Flippy of gunshots.
So far, the second part of Happy Trails is the only episode where Flippy doesn't flip out, though he did get angry with Flaky for accidentally ruining his (as well as the other Happy Tree Friends') means of escape from the island he was stranded on, and still buried him/her alive (or possibly murdered him/her.) The reason given that Flippy did not have a flashback was that Pop was originally intended for that role, and it wasn't until the last moment that they replaced him with Flippy.[1]
It is not yet known whether or not there are more things that could trigger Flippy's "Flip-outs" just yet, but surely future episodes featuring him will reveal new ways to begin his devastating rampages.
Spoilers end here.
Possible connections with the Vietnam War
Some, if not all, of these things that trigger Flippy's killing sprees are possibly connected to the Vietnam War in one way or another. The burning school in "Class Act", for instance, can be connected with the burning of the villages by US troops in their hunt for the elusive Viet Cong. The explosion in the truck's exhaust pipe in Remains to be Seen points to another possible connection to the war in Vietnam, that US troops sometimes ducked at such sounds in friendly territories, mistaking them for gunshots due to them being on-the-edge all the time. The campfire trigger in This is Your Knife is yet another possible connection, as it wasn't uncommon for US and North Vietnamese troops to make small campfires in the jungles. The flashes in Keeping it Reel is not as clear at first, but a quick look at Flippy himself will make it yet another possible connection with the Vietnam War. First of all, Flippy is possibly a member of the United States Army Special Forces (judging by the green beret he always wears), also called Green Berets, at one point of time in his life. Secondly, it is widely known that the Green Berets played a very active part of the Vietnam War, manning small bases which are constantly under attack by North Vietnamese forces, especially at night. During these intense night battles, machine gun fire merely looked like flashes and flickers, making the flickering in Keeping it Reel a trigger for Flippy. Of course, that ninja on the screen, despite not being dressed in black, may had reminded Flippy of his enemy (possibly the Viet Cong).
It must be noted that Flippy probably isn't created intentionally as a reference to the Vietnam War, although he (as stated earlier) is a possible reference to Rambo, who is a Vietnam veteran himself.
TV Series
Happy Tree Friends gained its own show in 2006. It premiered on October 2nd, 2006. This makes sense, seeing as how the characters are already part of G4's Late Night Peep Show, a show currently airing on the network. In Europe the new series already started at Germany's MTV Central since September 27, 2006. The TV Series is different from the internet version basically in length and story. The TV series also expands the Happy Tree Friends personalities a little more than they could in the internet version. So far 39 segements have been announced meaning 13 episodes for Season 1. Pictures of the first 6 episodes can be seen on G4's website.
